An FIR is an important part of the criminal justice process.
An FIR generally records information relating to a cognizable offence received by the police. However, registration of an FIR does not by itself establish guilt.
The subsequent investigation, evidence, statements, medical or documentary material and judicial proceedings have their own legal significance.
Understanding the difference between an FIR, investigation, charge-sheet and trial is important for anyone involved in a criminal proceeding.
